Interview With Gozo
Can you explain why this piece relates to alchemy?
-It is a representation of Nigredo, the initial phase of the alchemical process, symbolized by blackness or putrefaction. It is the moment of decomposition, the step before transformation.
In your opinion, what is the relationship between the image and the title of an abstract work?
-When I have a clear idea of what I want to represent, the title is decided from the beginning, as in "Nigredo." In other instances, I start with a vague idea or a series of mental associations that unfold as I work on the piece. Upon completion, I can see clearly where everything comes from, and that is when the title emerges.
You've mentioned suspended moments to me before. What's that?
-I do not seek to portray linear narratives. Rather, I lean towards abstractions that generate continuous relationships. In my still lifes, I aim to infuse corporeality into these spaces in perpetual motion without displacement.
Why are there some recurring elements in your work, such as teeth?
-To me, teeth symbolize change, conflict, and friction. The presence of bones and teeth in my work is like a bridge between my body and the abstractions in the spaces I create.
In what way do you think that alchemy will appear in modern times?
-I believe alchemy maintains its relevance as I perceive it as an internal search where experimentation and the intangible manifest through symbols and processes. Many of us channel this process through art, shaping our own recipes and methods. The alchemical phase in this piece, Nigredo, according to Jung's psychological interpretation, involves accepting our shadow, encompassing emotions, perceptions, and thoughts we commonly reject, a step in our quest.
